At one New England textile manufacturer, inventory tracking ran entirely on habit — a mix of memory, paper notes, and spreadsheets that were only ever half-updated. Nobody could say with confidence what was on hand or where it actually sat.
The cost showed up in lost production. On more than one occasion, the shop delayed or turned down orders believing they were out of a material — when it was on site the entire time, sitting somewhere nobody thought to check. Lead times had the same problem: quoted from experience and gut feel, not from what the floor could actually deliver.

Ryder Industrial Systems designed the data structure and workflow for receiving, storage, and issue of materials, with every unit tracked to a specifically assigned section of storage — a question about material on hand is now answered by looking it up, down to the box, rather than searching the building. Alongside it, I built a production model tracking output and efficiency per loom, generating an expected finish date for an order based on how each loom is actually performing.
Result — Material is never "lost" on the floor; missed production orders from this no longer happen

The system was designed around how this shop actually operates — how material is staged, how it moves, how each machine performs — rather than forcing the shop to fit generic software. That's usually what determines whether a system gets used or abandoned after two months.
